  • Even some professionals have trouble painting metal with a brush and opt instead to use spray rigs. However, if you plan to paint metal with a brush, there are a few techniques you can employ that will give you a much better chance at a sharp, flawless-looking finish coat. Step 1 Clean the metal thoroughly with a rag dampened with mineral spirits.
  • If you are painting a large area by brush, apply paint to an area about 50cm X 50cm, then brush the paint in horizontal strokes to even the paint out and finish off with light vertical strokes all in one direction. If you are using a brush and roller, paint the edges of the area first.
